Dwelling
In the sixteen years I worked in rural KwaZulu, near Mkuze, I appreciated the dwellings' similarity yet individuality. The dwellings had a tactile "maker" feel, places of rest marked by the hands that dwelt in them. Some seemed maintained, some a work in progress, and some in the inevitable process of decay. All of them seemed designed by the immediate surroundings as much as by their builders. They appeared as life-monuments with a heritage and embedded culture. They were captured in a square format in black and white. They were scanned full-frame and prepared as standard tonal black-and-white images. The attention had to be on the structure. The photographs document what was there, but are framed to speak as an artefact and metaphor for a place of rest. Acts 7:49 ...what house will ye build me...
