My services include music recording, mixing, and mastering. A connection with the audio environment stems from a career-long investment in audiovisual productions. Recording interests include solo artists with or without accompaniment, instrumentalists, choirs, and orchestral performances. A focal interest in microphone selection and placement during the recording phase steers the objective towards some authenticity of the experience. A subjective mixing approach sonically balances the supporting microphone placements and processing enhancements through level adjustments, sonic placement and software enhancement. Recording choir
Audio Engineer
I record dialogue audio and any other audio that will draw viewers into a more immersive experience of a visual story. Audio plays a critical part in storytelling, contextualising the visual intent. We are used to hearing and seeing selectively when we experience everyday life. As an audio engineer, I apply auditory effects, the ambient sounds, and post-processing to create audio that supplements and enhances what we see in a visual production. Auditory strategies can include loudness, placement and synchronised auditory clues that create an atmosphere, and reality to fulfil the aims of the visual story. The final mix brings the audio strategy together as an integrated and almost unnoticed enhancement of the visual storyline. A field recorder allows for multi-channel mixing or separation between multiple microphones, which is then mixed and balanced separately. Appropriate sound enhancement and audio processing is done in the final mix to ensure a glued experience.
Pipe Organ recording
Pipe-organ virtuoso Prof. Albert Troskie advised the three-manual Fehrle-en-Roeleveldt organ design. The organ design that includes 2028 pipes was severely damaged by adverse weather and restored in 2020 by Archie Devere. The organ was installed in 1975 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Vredefort and was played in this recording by Erna Rademan.
FAK youth orchestra
The FAK (Federasie van die Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge) established a youth orchestra in 2022, led by conductor Jaco van Staaden. The 26-member orchestra aims to promote the skills and practice of traditional orchestra music among the youth.
Audio Tuning
With advanced Melodyne software, we can tune vocals and instruments for musicians. We can correct pitch modulation and drift, sibilance, amplitude, and more. This manual process is preferred over autotune software for more natural-sounding corrections. Please get in touch with us for further assistance.
Audio restoration
We can enhance and restore audio recordings degraded by unwanted background noise, such as electrical hum, clicks, wind noise, room ambience, etc. We can also separate audio elements within a recording for creative sound and dialogue editing in film and documentary work.
